March 2013: seaFAST installations

March came and went in a blur! Too much happening in the lab to keep up. One major event was a week-long visit of Nathan Saetviet of Elemental Scientific Inc. (ESI) to install two new systems: A seaFAST II and a seaFAST Pico.
Both devices are designed to chemically separate (through ion chromatography) trace metals (e.g., rare earth elements) from other major ions (e.g., sodium). This separation will allow Keck Lab users to take full advantage of the sensitivity of the instrumentation available. We look forward to running many, many samples with these new devices to look into the nature of a range of scientific questions ranging from natural sea water analyses for the GEOTRACES initiative, to complex man-made hydrofracking fluids.
